Ladakh & Zanskar: An Overview

This trip will take you to the regions of Ladakh and Zanskar in the north of Indian Himalayas. Situated next to Tibet/China, this area was briefly a part of the kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet. These regions are inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions of India and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet.

Sitting at an altitude of over 11,500 feet, in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas, this area is surrounded by very high mountain passes on all sides. Ladakh and Zanskar have an average annual precipitation of 50-125 mm and 330 sunny days in a year. Ladakh ("land of high passes”) is a region that currently extends from the Kunlun mountain range to the main Great Himalayas to the south.

There are vast numbers of Buddhist monasteries and an extremely rich culture and heritage. His Holiness Dalai Lama often mentions this region as his favourite place on the planet.

PHAEDRA HICKS (Certified Yoga Instructor)

My yoga journey and life journey has been all about discovery, and a playful curiosity. The style of yoga I teach is a combination of alignment and flow on the ground or on the water. I teach SUP yoga because I love the outdoors and I love adventure! If I use my physical body to its full potential, I sleep hard at night. Moving from distraction to direction requires “movement “of some kind. I understand that my practice will inevitably shift but for now I want to ride that wave as long as my physical body can.

I am in love with this beautiful planet. I love mountains and I love water, that’s why I live where I live, on the West Coast of Canada, it was not by chance that I live here, it took desire and drive. I guided tourists out to see the whales by kayak on the East coast, in Newfoundland, and I was an assistant organizer for a hiking group in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, I have cultivated a respect for the mountains, and for the Ocean, both of which can take my breath away. I will never stop being a student of the world, and want to soak up as much fun as I can every day!
