I know I am a privileged white woman who was invited to embark on a transformative journey through the Himalayas. By privileged, I mean that I can stand humble and proud to have said “yes” to Sarju, despite my fears about India. I realize now that my fears were based on my ignorance of a foreign country which was painted to me (via media and other people’s own apprehensions) as dangerous, misogynistic, poor and where I would get sick.
As a traveler, I have come to learn that when you are privileged enough to own a passport, have health care, have opportunities to travel to foreign countries – the first thing you do is be respectful to the local culture. I was prepared to go to India under Sarju’s kind and professional guidance. I educated myself about the local customs and made sure to dress up with respect. I observed, joined my palms and bowed, loved the food, never got sick, always felt safe, made friends and was cared for from start to finish.
Little I knew about the depth of transformation that I would experience in India. I was and still am a Yoga guide (teacher) and “Nature” is where I belong (like all of us). We “lived” Yoga along this entire journey. Our morning classes were the lessons from our past (previous day), the acknowledgment of how we felt in the present (tired, sore, grateful, emotional, excited) and the foundation of our future (walks). This morning ritual was living and transforming within us throughout our day, reminding us to slow down and connect to our breath.
I discovered the true meaning of yoga through connecting with myself, nature and others … in silence.
Ready to do it again!
This trip will take you to the regions of Ladakh and Zanskar in the north of Indian Himalayas. Situated next to Tibet/China, this area was briefly a part of the kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet. These regions are inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions of India and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet.
Sitting at an altitude of over 3500 meters, in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas, this area is surrounded by very high mountain passes on all sides. Ladakh and Zanskar have an average annual precipitation of 50-125 mm and 330 sunny days in a year. Ladakh (“land of high passes”) is a region that currently extends from the Kunlun mountain range to the main Great Himalayas to the south.
There are vast numbers of Buddhist monasteries and an extremely rich culture and heritage. His Holiness Dalai Lama often mentions this region as his favourite place on the planet.
Buddhist Monastery and temple located in Zanskar region of the Himalayas. Constructed around a natural cave up the mountain, it can only be reached on foot.
This region is believed to have been visited by numerous sages, scholars and monks around 2500 years ago. The present Phugtal Gompa, of Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, was established in the early 15th century by Jangsem Sherap Zangpo, a disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, who was the founder of Gelug, which is one of the newest schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Tso Moriri, Ladakh. 4595 m
Located in the Changthang area of the Ladakh region, Tso Moriri is the largest lake in the Trans-Himalayas located within India. There are few settlements along the lake, with Kurzok being the most prominent one. Tso Moriri is a brackish water lake with maximum length of about 19 kilometres and a maximum width of about 3 kilometres. It’s surface area is approx 120 km2
Diskit, Nubra Valley, Ladakh. 3144 m
Nubra valley, due to its lower altitude has a milder climate and is often referred as “the Orchard of Ladakh”. Nubra is known for Bactrian camels and 32 meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha on the hill below the Diskit monastery, which is the oldest in the Nubra Valley and was founded in the 14th century.
Janie discovered yoga more than fifteen years ago during her time in acting school. In 2012, she followed her intuition and decided to complete the Moksha-Modo 500 hours teacher training, becoming a yoga teacher.
In 2014, she took on the challenge of becoming the manager of Le Studio de Yoga Wanderlust in Montréal. She completed the 75 hours Kula Yoga Project advanced teacher training (style from New York City) which is a vinyasa that marries music and yoga. In the same year, she also guided her first yoga retreat in Panama, a singular experience which confirmed her taste for travel and adventure!
As an outdoor advocate, among all her sports; hiking, biking, swimming, snowboarding, etc, yoga continues to be her holistic medicine. It is in Yoga that she returns to centre herself and heal her sore muscles!
For Janie, Yoga is where we meet the other and ourselves in all our uniqueness. It is a passion and a way of living she shares daily with everyone she meets.
The beauty of yoga is that as each student becomes a teacher, each teacher shall always remain an eternal student.
Janie looks forward to seeing you in the mountains, on the streets, at the health food store or on the mat!
